Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The Council of the European Union today adopted an assistance measure within the framework of the European Peace Facility worth 15 million euros for the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The aim of this assistance measure is to support Mauritania's land- and sea-based surveillance and deterrence capabilities.
A statement issued on the sidelines of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers on Monday said, “This support aims to strengthen the protection of the national territory and territorial waters of Mauritania. It will also help in combating illegal activities at sea that would undermine the security and authority of Mauritania, and thus contribute to maintaining the stability of Mauritania, and provide Better security conditions for the civilian population in the country and in the region.
Concretely, EPF support will provide individual protective equipment, medical equipment, multi-purpose aviation equipment and a patrol boat.
Today's decision comes in response to the request of the Mauritanian authorities and demonstrates the European Union's commitment to continuing its strong and comprehensive partnership with Mauritania.
The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance actions within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy to prevent conflicts, maintain peace and promote international security and stability. In particular, the European Peace Facility allows the European Union to finance actions designed to strengthen the capacities of third states and regional and international organizations in relation to military and defense matters.
