Khartoum - New York: Europe and Arabs
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, held a phone call with Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council, yesterday, Saturday. According to the daily news bulletin of the United Nations
A statement issued by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General stated that Guterres discussed with Al-Burhan the movement of humanitarian aid through the Adre border crossing. It was agreed to facilitate the movement of humanitarian supplies into the country.
They also agreed that the United Nations would work in parallel with the Sudanese authorities to develop a simplified system for rapid treatment and delivery of humanitarian aid.
This comes after the World Health Organization and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees warned of the challenge posed by a second deadly cholera outbreak in Sudan, which has been torn apart by war since April 2023.
At a press conference for United Nations agencies in Geneva, the representative of the World Health Organization in Sudan, Dr. Shebl Sahbani, reported 658 cases of cholera since the latest outbreak was declared on August 12, with 28 deaths. The latest cholera outbreak in May saw more than 11,300 cases and at least 300 deaths.
The World Health Organization warned in its latest situation report on Sudan that at least 12 of Sudan’s 18 states are now facing three or more cholera outbreaks in addition to malaria, measles and dengue fever.
The organization said that local resources and capacity to detect and respond to outbreaks remain limited, especially in hard-to-reach areas such as Darfur and Kordofan states.
