Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
In his speech at an event hosted by the German Marshall Fund at the end of last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pointed to five key lessons for NATO’s continued success after a crucial decade at the helm of NATO. Dutchman Mark Warta will take over from the Dutch in early October.
A statement issued by the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels read: “As part of his farewell speech, Mr Stoltenberg stressed the importance of continuing to increase defense spending and ensuring strong economic ties between the Allies. He highlighted NATO’s steadfast support for Ukraine and how this will be crucial in helping to end Russia’s war. Reflecting on NATO’s experience in Afghanistan, the Secretary General also stressed the need to clearly define the objectives of any future military operations outside NATO’s borders.
Mr Stoltenberg concluded his speech by emphasizing the importance of the transatlantic bond between Europe and North America, highlighting that “investing in the transatlantic relationship is the only way forward successfully.”
