French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Monday that the European Union is moving to lift some of the sanctions imposed on Syria, indicating that his country will propose imposing sanctions on Iranian officials responsible for detaining French citizens in Iran.
For her part, Kaya Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, said that she expects EU members to agree to a "step-by-step approach" to ease sanctions on Syria.
"It is a step-by-step approach," Kallas added at the beginning of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels to discuss this step. According to what was reported by the European News Network website in Brussels "Euronews"
The ministers are discussing the future of European support for Syria in light of recent developments, as the European Council confirmed in December 2024 that the fall of the former Assad regime represents a historic opportunity to reunify and rebuild the country.
The EU stressed the importance of a Syrian-led political process that ensures the fulfilment of the aspirations of the Syrian people in accordance with the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. In this context, the ministers are expected to discuss options for supporting Syria, including the possibility of easing European sanctions imposed on it, as part of the EU’s efforts to enhance stability and rebuild Syrian institutions.
