Electric and hybrid cars strengthen their position: 66% of sales in the Belgian market

In 2024, electric and hybrid cars continue to make steady progress, gaining market share at the expense of petrol and diesel vehicles. This is evident from figures on the number of motor vehicle registrations collected by the Belgian Statistical Office (Statbel).
Hybrid and electric cars will remain the most popular new cars in Belgium, with a market share of 66% in 2024.

In 2019, they accounted for only 8% of sales. In 2024, out of a total of 456,278 cars sold, 300,647 were hybrid and electric cars. In 2019, 43,902 cars were sold out of a total of 557,970 cars.
Compared to hybrid and electric vehicles, petrol-powered vehicles continue to lose market share of 28% in 2024. This represents a decrease in the number of vehicles sold of 17% compared to 2023 and 62% compared to 2019.
The market share of new diesel vehicles also fell sharply, from 31% in 2019 to 5% in 2024.
568,059 new vehicles were registered in Belgium. Of these, 456,278 were passenger cars. This represents a decrease of 5% compared to 481,079 passenger cars in 2023.
In 2024, there was a 37% increase in sales of fully electric vehicles. In 2024, 127,908 electric vehicles will be sold, compared to 93,086 in 2023.
Sales of new hybrid passenger cars (petrol or diesel + electric) will fall by 10% from 191,522 in 2023 to 172,739 in 2024.
For comparison, sales of gasoline-powered cars in 2024 will fall by 17% to 128,566 compared to 154,056 in 2023.
70% of newly registered hybrid and electric cars in 2024 will be registered by companies and 30% by individuals.
Of the total 127,908 new electric cars registered, 110,583 were registered by companies (86%) and 17,325 by individuals (14%).
As for hybrid cars, 172,739 cars were registered in 2024, of which 100,944 were commercial cars (58%) and 71,795 were passenger cars (42%).
