BRICS Summit: UN: Environment Under Comprehensive Attack, and the Poor Pay the Price

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that our environment is under attack on all fronts, noting that accelerating disasters are tearing lives apart and destroying livelihoods globally, leaving sustainable development gains in tatters. He explained that the most vulnerable and the poor are paying the heaviest price, emphasizing the urgent need to address the intersecting challenges of climate and health. According to the UN News Bulletin, which added, "The Secretary-General was speaking at a session titled "Environment, COP30, and Global Health," as part of the BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Guterres emphasized the need for governments to build on the progress made at last year's Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity, particularly by reaching an ambitious agreement on financing, adding that we need to make COP30, which will be held this year in Brazil, a success."
The Secretary-General had spoken on Sunday at a session on "Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic and Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence," saying that artificial intelligence is reshaping economies and societies, and that the key test lies in how wisely we guide this transformation.
Antonio Guterres also emphasized that artificial intelligence cannot be the preserve of the few, but must benefit everyone, especially developing countries, which must have a real voice in AI governance.
The Secretary-General is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with some of the leaders attending the BRICS Summit.
Brazil, Russia, India, and China have established a group BRICS was formed in 2006. South Africa joined in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Together, these eleven countries represent more than half of the world's population and nearly a third of global GDP.
