He concluded his speech as a pledge to confront political violence with a broader plan, saying: "My administration will find everyone who contributed to this crime and in any other political violence, including the organizations that funded and support it, as well as those who target judges and law enforcement officers and everyone who works to impose order in our country."
How did the incident occur?
Kirk had launched a cultural tour entitled "The American Return Tour", which includes 15 activities in various universities across the country, and Utah was its first station.
Videos showed the moment of his death, as he was sitting on a platform to address a large open -air crowd, about 64 km south of the city of Salt Lake, at 12:20 pm local time, when one bullet sounded.
At that moment, Kirk was trying to answer a question from one of the attendees about weapons violence, according to video clips published on the Internet. One of the attendees asked him: "Do you know the number of perpetrators of mass killings in America during the past ten years?" Kirk answered, smiling, "Will the gang violence calculate or not?" In Washington, the House of Representatives failed to adhere to a moment of silence in mourning for Kirk, after the session turned into an exchange of screaming and accusations.
Republican and democratic politicians expressed their shock from the incident, and Hakim Jeffrez, leader of the democratic minority in the House of Representatives, said: "Political violence is unacceptable in any way and against any individual and completely contradicts the American values. We pray to his family in this tragedy."
