Gaza-Beirut: Europe and the Arabs
Israeli Army Radio reported that the army has placed its missile defense system in the north of the country on high alert.
This comes a day after Israel and Hezbollah announced the killing of a prominent Hezbollah military commander, Abu Ali Tabatabai, in a precise airstrike that targeted Beirut's southern suburbs, also killing four people and wounding 28 others. The Israeli army announced the start of a General Staff-level exercise to test readiness for various war scenarios. Iran condemned the assassination of Haytham Tabatabai, a Hezbollah military commander, in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that it "strongly condemns" the "cowardly assassination of the great commander of the Lebanese Islamic Resistance, the martyr Haytham Ali Tabatabai," in an airstrike that also killed four other Hezbollah members.
This development coincided with the continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the Israeli army continues to carry out airstrikes, artillery shelling, and demolition operations in various parts of the Strip. In a separate development, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir dismissed several senior army commanders and reprimanded others following the "failures" that accompanied the October 7, 2013, attack, when Hamas launched a surprise assault on southern Israel.
The army explained in a statement that a group of officers were informed of the termination of their reserve duty, while others received formal reprimands. The decisions included several former commanders of the Intelligence and Operations Directorates and the Southern Command, who had previously submitted their resignations from active duty but remained in the reserves. According to the European news network Euronews in Brussels, under the headline "Gaza Hospitals: Four Palestinians Killed in Gaza and Khan Younis Since This Morning," medical sources in Gaza hospitals reported that four Palestinians were killed by Israeli army fire in Gaza City and Khan Younis since this morning. Under the headline "Katz Calls for Thorough Review of October 7 Report After Zamir's Decisions," the European news site reported that Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz called on the Defense Ministry's comptroller on Monday to conduct a thorough review of the report concerning the events of October 7, following Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir's decision to punish several commanders and officers.
Katz explained that the review would include an assessment of how the Turgeman Committee handled the materials it examined, as well as any gaps or issues it failed to address. The comptroller will also re-examine investigations deemed incomplete or insufficient and make recommendations regarding the need for further fact-finding. This comes after Hamas announced that a high-level delegation met with Egyptian General Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad in Cairo on Sunday to discuss the ceasefire agreement and developments in the Gaza Strip.
The delegation included the head of the movement's leadership council, Mohammed Darwish, and council members Khaled Meshaal, Khalil al-Hayya, Nizar Awadallah, and Zaher Jabarin, in addition to political bureau member Ghazi Hamad.
In its statement, the movement said the talks focused on arrangements for the second phase of the agreement and on assessing the situation in Gaza under the current field conditions.
The movement also discussed with Egyptian officials ways to solidify the first phase, emphasizing its commitment to its full implementation and its insistence on halting violations through a clear and specific mechanism overseen by mediators.
