Arnhem, Netherlands: Noureddine Amrani
In a letter addressed to the mosque councils and, through them, to the Muslim community, the Mayor of Arnhem, Ahmed Marcouch, emphasized the importance of embracing the true meanings of Islam, particularly those related to social solidarity and its power to unite people, rather than focusing solely on religious aspects. He stated that Ramadan is a month of sanctity, a religion for all humanity, for all Muslims worldwide. It is a month of prayer and reflection, a time to abstain from worldly pleasures and refrain from food and drink, with the aim of self-discipline, gratitude, and caring for others. It is more than just physical abstinence; it is a true discipline and spiritual exercise in taking responsibility and moral reorientation. It is, as Ahmed Marcouch added, "an exercise in life itself."
In his letter to the Muslim community, the mayor also dedicated a section to the Christian fast of the Forty Days of Lent, which this year coincides with the holy month of Ramadan. Ahmed Markouch, speaking as a father figure to all the citizens of Arnhem, pointed to the differences between the two Abrahamic religions and discussed in his address the merits of fasting and the importance of moral values that foster a spirit of solidarity and social cohesion, regardless of religious or spiritual background. He emphasized that such an idea could encompass the entire city, given the societal importance of these values in achieving universal humanity within a society based on solidarity, service to others, and respect for creation, as advocated by the Abrahamic religions. This spirit is further strengthened through Arnhem's educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and neighborhoods, through creative volunteer initiatives that form a robust and resilient social fabric.
Ahmed Markouch praised the social solidarity among the various segments of society, especially during times of hardship, when citizens stand shoulder to shoulder with one another. The mayor called on everyone to consider the blessed month of Ramadan as a source of communication, unity and understanding, with the aim of achieving peace of mind and tranquility for all, and avoiding crowding in parking areas. He wished everyone a blessed month full of meaning and inner peace.
