US President Joe Biden has ordered an extension of the state of emergency on the "risk of election interference" in the United States. Biden addressed House Speaker Nancy Polisi, asking her to "continue the national emergency" beginning on September 12 regarding the potential for foreign interference in or undermining public confidence in the United States' elections. This state of emergency system has been in place since September 12, 2018, when it was imposed by the administration of former President Donald Trump. This decree gives a legal basis for imposing various sanctions against the parties that the United States suspects of trying to influence the outcome and conduct of the American elections or harm the electoral system. On the basis of this decree, the United States imposed sanctions on several Russian figures and entities after they were accused of allegedly interfering in the US elections.
