In Belgium, €3.5 billion is spent annually on pets. This came according to a study conducted by the Comos trade union and the results of which were published in Brussels.
Within four years, sales had grown by nearly 11 percent.
The total amount of 3.5 billion euros includes food, but also toys, care, nutritional supplements and medicines.
The increase in quantity is partly due to the increase in the number of pets since the Corona pandemic and lockdowns. For example, 53 percent of Belgians now own a pet, an increase of 10 percent compared to 2018.
According to the research, there are about 1.6 million dogs in Belgium, distributed among about 1.3 million dog owners. Each dog owner spends an average of €549 per year on dog food. The cat population fell about 3 percent to 2.3 million cats.
Furthermore, 45 percent of Belgian pet owners seem to purchase pet food online. In 2018, that percentage was only 28 percent. Pet services, such as pet grooming, pet walking, pet grooming, and pet riding, are also experiencing a significant upward trend.
The results are based on a Shopperware survey of 2,500 Belgians, commissioned by Comeos.
