Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
Today, Tuesday, at NATO headquarters in Brussels, the joint declaration on cooperation between the European Union and NATO was signed, and after the signing, during the joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and President of the Federation Council Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, "We were already very close partners before Russia's brutal war, so we have tested and coordinated our responses to crises through the many exercises we have conducted together. We have strengthened our cooperation against cyberattacks, for better military mobility, to fight disinformation;or by countering hybrid attacks against Latvia, Poland and Lithuania organized by the Lukashenko regime. "In view of the times we are in, we know that we have to strengthen and deepen this partnership of more than 20 years. Because the security of Europe is in danger and has been threatened. This is also reflected in Sweden and Finland's desire to join NATO. We very much look forward to Sweden and Finland joining the alliance." NATO soon. This is also reflected in Denmark's abolition of the defense-related withdrawal clause in the European Union. All of this shows that we are aware of the change Dee, but we are able to stand up to him.
She added that the Russian threats and challenges are the most urgent, but not the only ones. And "We are also witnessing China's increasing attempts to reshape the international system in its favour. So we must strengthen our resilience. With this new joint declaration, we are also taking our partnership to the next level. We will deepen and expand our excellent cooperation into new areas. I would like to take a quick look at four who are they.
The first is that we will further intensify our work on combating hybrid and cyber threats in addition to terrorism. We already have close cooperation, but we want to expand and deepen it.
The second is: we will intensify cooperation in emerging and disruptive technology and space. We've already done a lot together, but we can do even more.
The third area is: We will address the looming security implications of the climate crisis. It seems a bit far away, but we are fully aware that with the climate crisis and extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, we see more and more instability with all the consequences of poverty, unrest and instability in entire regions. So, that's also a point of focus for us together.
And the fourth point: Of course, we will strengthen our resilience. The resilience of our societies against malicious foreign interference to manipulate information. Most importantly, the resilience of our critical infrastructure against all types of attacks. The Nord Stream sabotage showed that we need to take more responsibility for the security of our network infrastructure. There too, we recognize that individual states are responsible for the security of this infrastructure. And certainly, we will not share weaknesses. But following best practices and experiences, this is an area where we can work more closely together and where we will intensify collaboration.
"The European Union will continue to do everything it can to support the brave people of Ukraine. We will continue to put pressure on the Kremlin for as long as possible, with a severe sanctions regime. We will extend these sanctions to include those who militarily support Russia's war such as Belarus or Iran. We will move forward with sanctions," she concluded. New to Belarus, in response to Belarus's role in this Russian war in Ukraine. We will continue our significant humanitarian, economic and security assistance to Ukraine for as long as necessary. Of course, there is the issue of strengthening European defense capabilities as laid out in the Strategic Compass. So, we all know we need now "To increase the production capacity of our defense industry. We need to coordinate the renewal of military equipment."
