The Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union adopted, during a meeting today, Monday, new sanctions against Iran, according to what the current Swedish rotating presidency of the Union announced in a tweet on Twitter and wrote that the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Union today adopted a new package of sanctions against Iran, targeting those who lead repressions.
The EU Presidency said, "The European Union strongly condemns the brutal and disproportionate use of force by the Iranian authorities against peaceful demonstrators.
European Union diplomats confirmed to dpa that more than 36 Iranian individuals and organizations would be targeted in response to grave human rights violations.
Tehran has cracked down on the demonstrations, including recent executions of protesters, triggered by the death in police custody of an Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, after her arrest for allegedly violating strict Islamic dress codes.
The sanctions decision comes at a time when the member states of the European Union are discussing the inclusion of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the list of terrorism within the bloc, which represents a legal challenge.
The European Union previously targeted Iran with three packages of sanctions over human rights violations since the protests began last year, with 146 individuals and 12 organisations, including members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, targeted.
