Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The "extreme right-wing Vlaams Belang" party in Belgium organized a protest stand today, Saturday, in the presence of two hundred people in front of the Ibis Hotel in the town of Ruisbroek of the city (Saint-Peters-Leo), where about 170 asylum seekers and illegal immigrants were brought from a street in the town of Scharbeek in Brussels to the hotel.
"Asylum policy in this country is bankrupt," said party chairman Tom Van Griken. "This week's events are the best example of that." According to the party, with the current politics, it is only a matter of time before such events happen again.
Last Wednesday, a thousand asylum seekers and illegal immigrants who were staying in tents on the street were evacuated. According to the far-right party, the evacuation was chaotic. Numbers of them were transported by bus. to a suitable shelter, but after a few hours it turned out that less than 200 men had been taken to a hotel in Flanders. The party said the bill would be paid from the taxes paid by the Belgian.
A party statement, of which we received a copy, indicated that the Minister of State for Asylum and Immigration, Nicole de Moore (CD & V), had confirmed in the past that staying in hotels was not a solution. But it seems that the Minister of State was not informed and this was a decision of the Brussels region. Despite all the promises that asylum seekers or illegal immigrants would not be housed in hotels, something happened. "Minister de Maur has completely lost control of the situation," says Barbara Bass, leader of the Vlaams Belang parliamentary group. “We are here today not to confront people on the run, as some would like to appear, but to protest government policy and an unworkable and unsustainable asylum system.”
Flemish Member of Parliament Klas Slotmans, himself from Flemish Brabant, expressed dissatisfaction in the region about the situation. "Flanders is paying a heavy price for this asylum policy," he said. Flanders is not a receptacle of world misery
The statement also read, "Vlaams Belang wants to send a clear message to both the federal government and the Brussels government about the procedure at the Ibis hotel. The party calls for a fundamentally different immigration policy. For example, there should be physical barriers at European external borders and applicants should Asylums await their procedures in centers abroad. Here the government must work on a return policy. This country is full," and "as long as the flow does not drop dramatically, the tap is open and we will remain the hotel of the world."
