Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that his country did not inform the United States in advance of the decision to suspend participation in the Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Offensive Arms (START-3).
"The United States learned of the decision to suspend participation in the treaty through the speech of Russian President Vladimir Putin," Peskov said, according to "Russia Today" channel, on Wednesday.
Yesterday, President Putin announced, in his State of the Union address to the Russian Parliament, that his country would suspend its participation in the "New START" treaty, which is a treaty between the United States and Russia to reduce strategic arms.
The US State Department said it was not clear whether there would be practical effects of Russia's withdrawal from the New START treaty, according to Sky News.
Putin said in a speech to the Federal Assembly on Tuesday that Ukraine and its allies started the war. Putin has shown no sign of ending the invasion despite failing to achieve any of his military goals after a year of brutal fighting. Putin made it clear that Moscow is not withdrawing from the agreement but is suspending its participation in it.
Under the important agreement to limit nuclear weapons, the United States and Russia allow each other to inspect each other's weapons sites, but the inspection has stopped since 2020 due to the Corona epidemic.
