The Champions of the Earth Prize recognizes individuals, groups and organizations whose actions have a transformative impact on the environment. According to what the United Nations stated in its daily bulletin on its website and added:
This year, the United Nations Environment Program is seeking nominations from individuals, organizations and governments working to find sustainable solutions to eliminate plastic pollution.
Nominations for the 2023 session will remain open to all from March 4 to April 4.
The international organization says that each year, the efforts of individuals, groups and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and restoring its natural systems are recognized in four categories:
Policy leadership
Inspiration and action
Entrepreneurial vision
Science and innovation
As for the selection process, the UN says, "UNEP champions are selected from among nominations received from all over the world and are open to all.
A team of UNEP staff and subject matter experts reviews and considers each nomination.
The selection criteria are as follows:
Make an impact - Did the candidate's actions lead to profound environmental gains or show significant potential for replication and scaling up?
Innovation - Has the candidate done or achieved something new and innovative?
The Power of the Story - How engaging and inspiring is the candidate's story to others?
