The United States of America and South Korea emphasized the importance of cooperation between strong and resilient democracies to address the world's greatest challenges to protect common security and prosperity, address the climate crisis, promote global health and prepare for epidemics, and ensure that new and emerging technologies work for democratic societies rather than against them.
This came in a joint statement by US President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart Yoon Sok-yul on the third democracy summit, according to what was published by the White House on its website today, Wednesday.
The two presidents affirmed Washington and Seoul's deep ties, rooted in the values of shared democracy and respect for human rights, and reaffirmed their commitment to continue strengthening strong political, economic, security and people-to-people relations.
Reflecting on this work, Biden and Yoon expressed their aspiration to co-host the second Democracy Summit to continue building connections between democracies, so that they can better meet the needs of our people and the world.
According to the joint statement, South Korea will host the third Summit for Democracy in the Future.
The two leaders also expressed their pride in continuing to work together to ensure that the momentum generated by the first two Democracy Summits continues into the future.
Biden and Yoon stressed that promoting transparent and accountable governance rooted in the consent of the governed is a fundamental necessity of our time.
