Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada announced that he will hold talks with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin in Tokyo on June 1.
Hamada said - as reported by the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) Friday - that the talks will address concrete measures to enhance the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japanese-US alliance.
Hamada indicated that detailed talks will be held on the topics on the agenda of the "two plus two" meeting held in Washington last January between the defense and foreign ministers of the two countries.
It should be noted that Austin's visit to Japan will be the first since March 2021.
This comes after the White House announced that President Joe Biden will nominate Air Force Commander General Charles Brown as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to succeed General Mark Milley, according to US media.
The US presidency said in a statement that Biden will announce his intention to nominate the African-American general for the highest military position in the United States during a ceremony that will be held in the Rose Garden of the White House.
And if the Senate approves the appointment of General Brown, he will succeed General Mark Milley, who has held the position of Chief of Staff since October 1, 2019, and his term will end soon.
