The entrances and exits of motorways are particularly perilous and during the period from 2021 to 2022, there were more than 1 in 2 fatal accidents. 1 in 10 highway deaths has been from pedestrians. This is the conclusion of a new study by the road institute Vias.
All fatal accidents on highways in the period 2021-2022 were investigated by the VIAS Institute. In Belgium, the results indicated that more than a third (38 percent) of the total vehicle kilometers are covered on motorways..Vias recorded 31 deaths per 1,000 injuries. This is 3 to 4 times more than in built-up areas (9 deaths per 1,000 infections).
Vias investigated 151 fatal highway accidents in the period 2021-2022. . At least 10 percent of the fatal accidents occurred on a ramp and more than 4 fatalities in 10 (44 percent) occurred in the immediate vicinity (500 metres). Thus, more than 1 in 2 fatal accidents (54 percent) occurred at or near the entrance or exit of roads.
Vias also found that 1 in 10 road users who died in a highway accident was a pedestrian, and the risk of death was very high, with 29 percent of the pedestrians involved in the accident dying.
According to the VIAS Institute, this statistical analysis shows the presence of dangerous highway locations. “This is a situation where road users interact with each other or have to change direction suddenly, such as at intersections or sloping roads and often at turns, which can be sharp at times,” said Vias.
