Climate Action Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra takes part in a pre-COP28 meeting in Abu Dhabi during a visit on Monday and Tuesday. Commissioner Hoekstra will meet bilaterally with the Minister of Energy, His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud; and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.
On Monday, the Commissioner will participate in a public roundtable on “Pathways to 2030: What should a transformation that leaves no one behind look like?” He will participate in sessions on “Prioritizing People, Lives and Livelihoods; Fast Tracking the Energy Transition; and “Transforming Climate Finance.” He will participate in the Ad Hoc Ministerial Consultation on Adaptation with the Minister of Ecological Transition of Spain, Teresa Ribera; the Minister of the Environment of Chile, Maisa Rojas; Minister Climate Change and Energy in Australia, Jenny McAllister; and South Africa's Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs, Barbara Creasy - among others.
On Tuesday, Commissioner Hoekstra will meet with the President-designate of COP 28, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber. He will also meet Singapore's Minister of Sustainability and Environment, Grace Foo; And continue his bilateral discussions with other ministers. He will attend three round tables on: the “Inclusive Conference of the Parties”; “Operation of the Loss and Damage Fund and financing arrangements”; and “Towards a Transformative Global Assessment.”
The EU adopted its negotiating mandate for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) at the Environment Council on 16 October, and agreed to update its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which reflects the planned implementation of its “Fit 55” legislation. Ahead of the global assessment, the Commission on Friday hosted the “European Climate Assessment”, an event to reflect on the EU’s contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and listen to civil society and international partners. Commissioner Hoekstra gave the opening keynote address for the event.
