The members of the UN Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the “cowardly terrorist attack” that took place in the city of Kerman, Iran, on Wednesday, killing more than 100 people, including children and women, and wounding 211, some of whom are in critical condition.
In a press statement, the members of the Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and wished a speedy and complete recovery to the injured. The members reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations represents one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
They stressed the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible terrorist acts accountable and bring them to justice. The members urged all states, in line with their obligations in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate effectively with the Government of Iran and all other relevant authorities in this regard.
The Council members reaffirmed that any terrorist acts are criminal and unjustified, regardless of their motives, the place and time of their occurrence, and the identity of their perpetrators. They stressed the need for all States to combat by all means - consistent with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations - the threats to international peace and security resulting from terrorist acts.
Yesterday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attack and called for those responsible to be held accountable. He offered his condolences to the bereaved families, the people and the government of Iran. He expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.
It was reported that the attack occurred near the grave of Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in Kerman Province, which is witnessing the commemoration of the fourth anniversary of his killing.
The European Union condemned in the strongest terms the bombing that occurred in the city of Kerman in Iran. This horrific terrorist act led to the death of innocent civilians and the injury of many.
