The United Nations Support Mission in Libya calls for calm and de-escalation in the capital, Tripoli

Tripoli: Europe and the Arabs
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its deep concern over reports of a mobilization of forces in the capital, Tripoli, including threats to use force to resolve the crisis surrounding the Central Bank of Libya. According to the UN daily news bulletin, a copy of which we received this morning.

The mission immediately called for calm, de-escalation and self-restraint, and stressed that "there is no alternative to dialogue as the only solution to all contentious issues." A statement issued by the mission stated that it is conducting intensive contacts with all concerned parties to reach a peaceful agreement to resolve the crisis regarding the Central Bank.

The UN political mission stressed that the display of military force and armed confrontations in populated neighborhoods is unacceptable and threatens the lives, security and tranquility of civilians.

The mission said that these moves cannot produce an acceptable or practical solution to the current crisis or the prolonged political stalemate, and that they are an additional reason that exacerbates the crisis and reduces the chances of reaching a political solution.
Stephanie Khoury, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, recently told the Security Council that unilateral actions by Libyan political, military and security actors were increasing tensions, entrenching institutional and political divisions and complicating efforts to reach a negotiated political solution. She stressed that unilateral actions by political and security figures undermine stability, adding that "unilateral attempts to dismiss the Central Bank Governor are being met with counterattacks to keep him. Attempts to dismiss Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and his government are being met with attempts to keep him."
