EU Environment Ministers Meet to Discuss Preparations for UN Climate Change and Biodiversity Conferences

The European Commission in Brussels said in a statement that the meeting of the Council of Environment Ministers of the European Union countries will be held on Monday, October 14, in Luxembourg, in the presence of the European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra.
The ministers will focus on preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference COP29, which will be held in Baku (Azerbaijan) from November 11 to 22, and the UN Biodiversity Conference COP16, which will be held in Cali (Colombia) from October 21 to November 1. The ministers are expected to adopt the EU negotiating mandates for both meetings.
The ministers will also exchange views on the ongoing negotiations on a legally binding global treaty on plastic pollution and preparations for the upcoming fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, scheduled for November 25 to December 1. Later, they will discuss the implementation of the EU Chemicals Strategy. During an informal lunch, the ministers will discuss the climate and environmental aspects of Mario Draghi's latest report on the future of Europe's competitiveness.
