Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union's foreign policy coordinator, Kaya Kallas, said that the end of Assad's dictatorship is a long-awaited positive development. It also shows the weakness of Assad's backers, Russia and Iran. This came in a post written by the European official on the X website, adding through it, "Our priority is to ensure security in the region. I will work with all constructive partners, in Syria and in the region.
I am in close contact with ministers from the region. The process of rebuilding Syria will be long and complex, and all parties must be ready to engage constructively.
For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the future of Syria is a matter for the Syrians to decide.
Guterres added - in a statement carried by the official website of the United Nations - that there is a lot of work to be done to ensure an orderly political transition to renewed institutions, noting that his Special Envoy Geir Pedersen will work with all Syrians to achieve this goal.
At the same time, Guterres renewed his call to establish calm and avoid violence at this sensitive time, while protecting the rights of all Syrians without discrimination, noting that the sanctity of diplomatic and consular buildings and their personnel must be respected in all cases in accordance with international law.
Guterres said, "We will need the support of the international community to ensure that any political transition is comprehensive and meets the legitimate aspirations of the people of Syria, with all Its diversity,” stressing that Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity must be restored.
He pointed out that the United Nations will honor the memory of those who bore the brunt of the 14-year conflict.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations concluded his statement by saying, “We remain committed to helping Syrians build a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom and prosperity are common realities for all. This is the path to sustainable peace in Syria.”
