European Council President António Costa will travel to Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, to participate in the G7 Summit, which will be held from June 15 to 17, 2025. Canada, as the rotating G7 Presidency, will host this summit, which brings together the leaders of the G7 countries, as well as the European Union and other invited countries, to discuss pressing global issues, including international peace and security, the global economic outlook, and energy security.
The European Union will be represented by President Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Before his departure from Brussels, the EU institutions published a statement containing remarks by the EU President, which read, "In the face of significant challenges, and as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the G7, unity among G7 leaders is not just desirable, it is essential. Only by standing together can we protect our citizens, defend our values, and deliver real solutions to a world in desperate need of stability and direction."
During the seven scheduled sessions, the summit will affirm the leaders' commitment to collective action in support of Ukraine, the rules-based global order, and the promotion of economic security and resilience. The summit is also expected to address pressing global concerns, including energy security, protecting societies from climate disasters, cyber threats, and foreign interference. Geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region, will also be discussed. These include the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. These countries dominate global trade and the international financial system and serve as an intergovernmental political forum for discussing important economic and political issues. According to Brussels sources, the recent developments between Iran and Israel will dominate the summit.
