International Day of Democracy: EU: Human rights and the rule of law must be upheld more than ever. Violent conflicts destabilize countries and regions.

Brussels: Europe and the Arabs

On the International Day of Democracy, the European Union stressed the vital importance of upholding democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law, recognizing that they are more important than ever and that they form the foundation of societies.
This came in a joint statement issued in Brussels on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kallas, Commission Vice-President Heina Verkunen, and Commissioner for Justice and Democracy Michael McGrath. The statement also stated:
Democracy faces unprecedented challenges around the world. We are witnessing a rise in manipulation, interference, and disinformation by external actors. This undermines access to reliable information, eroding public trust in democratic institutions and processes. Growing polarization jeopardizes democratic debate, citizen participation, and hard-won rights. It also jeopardizes the protection of marginalized groups.
Authoritarian rhetoric seeks to undermine confidence in the integrity of electoral processes. Violent conflicts destabilize countries and regions and deepen insecurity. Furthermore, budget cuts for democracy support globally create a vacuum that authoritarian regimes seek to exploit.
Democracy is the foundation of peace, freedom, and prosperity, and it is the foundation of our European Union. It remains the most legitimate and effective way to address the challenges facing our societies, as well as the complexities of today's world. When informed citizens are free to participate effectively in shaping policy, everyone benefits.
Only democracy ensures that fundamental rights are upheld and respected.
We remain committed to defending and promoting democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law, as enshrined in our founding treaties and international law. We will support a free and pluralistic media, free and fair electoral processes, and protect freedom of expression by ensuring the flourishing of reliable, accurate, and impartial information.
Protecting democracy within the European Union and globally is a matter of security and values; these are our strategic interests. On this International Day of Democracy, we call on governments, organizations, and individuals to join us in supporting democracy and fundamental rights. Together, we can address these challenges and defend safe, stable, and inclusive societies where democratic values flourish and citizens participate freely.
