The first of its kind on combating terrorism and extremism: a dialogue between the European Union and Britain on common priorities and approaches

The European Union and the United Kingdom held their first counter-terrorism dialogue in Brussels on 2 February. The dialogue focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination in combating and preventing terrorism and violent extremism. According to what was stated in a statement issued by the office of Josep Borrell, the Union’s foreign and security policy coordinator
The European Union and the United Kingdom emphasized shared priorities in global counter-terrorism efforts and their assessment of the threat landscape domestically and globally.
Discussions took place on strategic methods to combat terrorism, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts in confronting terrorism and emphasizing the value of cooperation within multilateral frameworks, especially the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum, which the European Union currently co-chairs.
Combating online terrorist content and terrorist financing and restrictive measures targeting terrorism and violent extremism were key common priorities identified.
The next dialogue between the European Union and the United Kingdom on counter-terrorism is scheduled to be held in London.
The EU was represented by the Special Envoy of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for Counter-Terrorism, Nadia Costantini, and was joined by the Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, Olivier Ondi, and the Office of the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator. Homeland Security Group and Competition Director Jonathan Emmett led the UK delegation.
