The European Union expressed its regret over the recent execution of 13 individuals that took place on the same day in Iraq. The European Union is also concerned about reports that up to 250 people are at imminent risk of execution in the country. According to a statement by the European spokesman for the European External Action Administration, published in Brussels last night
The statement added, “The European Union reiterates, in principle, its strong opposition to the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances. It is a cruel and inhuman punishment, and represents a complete deprivation of the right to life and human dignity. The death penalty fails to act as a deterrent to crime, and makes Miscarriage of justice is irreversible.
The European Union will continue to work towards the abolition of the death penalty in the few remaining countries that still apply it.
