New York: Europe and the Arabs
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, strongly condemned the dangerous escalation represented by the large-scale attack launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran on Israel this evening. He called for an immediate cessation of these hostilities.
António Guterres issued a statement expressing his deep concern about the real danger of a devastating escalation in the region. He urged all parties to exercise the utmost restraint with the aim of avoiding any action that might lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.
The Secretary-General said that he repeatedly stressed that neither the region nor the world can afford another war. According to what the United Nations website published in its daily news bulletin
For his part, UN General Assembly President Denis Francis issued a statement expressing deep concern about the unfolding situation in the Middle East - linked to Iran's launching of drones and missiles against Israel.
Francis said that the Iranians clarified their action in the context of Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, following the recent Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus.
Article 51 stipulates that there is nothing in the United Nations Charter that “will weaken or abridge the natural right of States, individually or collectively, to defend themselves if an armed force attacks a member of the United Nations, until the Security Council takes the necessary measures to maintain international peace and security.” ..”
The President of the General Assembly warned that the Iranian response exacerbates the already tense and sensitive situation of peace and security in the Middle East.
He strongly called on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint with the aim of avoiding further escalation of tension in the region, saying that this is a moment that requires a decision characterized by wisdom and prudence, as the risks and protracted dangers are carefully considered. He added: "I expect the Iranian authorities to honor their promise that by their action today, the matter can be considered over."
Dennis Francis warned that the vicious circle of attack and counter-attack will lead nowhere, but will inevitably lead to more death, suffering and misery, stressing that “dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve any differences peacefully.”
