UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed called for stronger efforts in women's empowerment, gender equality and climate action, in her speech at the Global Women's Forum held in Mongolia this week. The forum, which was held on August 22 and 23 under the theme “Towards a Green Future,” focused on promoting the Sustainable Development Goals, especially those that emphasize gender equality. In her speech on Thursday, the Deputy Secretary-General stressed the urgent need to accelerate progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, six years before the 2030 deadline for achieving those goals
She highlighted that women's leadership is essential to improving community services and effective climate action, but acknowledged that "time is not on our side." Amina Mohammed added: “Despite our awareness of the urgency and progress we have made, we find ourselves far from the finish line. At this pace, this mission will be passed on to future generations.”
Supporting women's leadership In her opening remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General outlined action plans to advance equality, starting with supporting women's leadership in environmental and climate action. She noted that women's lives are “closely linked” to natural resources, and they play a vital role in food security, stressing the need to support women’s environmental rights advocates, agricultural workers, and others in similar roles, while addressing the triple crisis facing the planet, in Reference to climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity. The UN official said: “Increasing global commitments to gender equality and the empowerment of women in all areas of environmental work must also be a common thread in all aspects of our multilateral cooperation.”
She called for stronger support to increase educational opportunities for girls and the need to eliminate gender-based violence. She added: “The rights of women and girls must be protected. We must shape a world where they can realize their power and live without fear.”
Priority for women's rights As world leaders prepare for the upcoming Future Summit in September, and the 2025 review of the Beijing+30 Report – a global assessment of gender equality and the status of women – the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations stressed the need to include gender equality and women’s empowerment in every aspect of the Goals. sustainable development
She said: “We need policies that prioritize the rights of women, especially young women, indigenous and rural women, and fully include their knowledge and experience.” The UN official also urged the need to remember the women and girls in conflict areas such as Afghanistan, Gaza and Sudan, who were abandoned. In this regard, she said: “Let us maintain the momentum to also highlight their burdens, challenges and atrocities they face.” She called for shaping the world in a way that girls and women can freely pursue their dreams, contribute to society and live in peace.
