Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The gains achieved from yesterday's European-Egyptian summit in Brussels were evident in the statements and declarations issued. Perhaps the most notable observation was the avoidance of mentioning the phrase, which has been repeated for years, namely the European Union's understanding of Israel's right to defend itself, as well as the demand that Israel refrain from using excessive force. The summit also demonstrated the extent of appreciation and respect for Egypt, represented by its president and the accompanying delegation. This represents a clear indication of Egypt's return to prestige and leadership in the region. Everyone noted the warm welcome and hospitality shown by all officials in European institutions, not to mention the warmth shown outside the EU by members of the Egyptian community who came from numerous European countries and sent a message of love and appreciation to their president, greeting him with phrases such as "Long live Egypt" and "We love you, Mr. President," as well as the national anthem.
Returning to the summit, after welcoming President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the first summit between the European Union and Egypt. António Costa, President of the European Council, said he was very pleased with the meeting. “It was an excellent summit. This meeting marks a milestone in our relationship and demonstrates the strength of our partnership,” according to a press release from the Office of the President of the European Council, distributed in Brussels and a copy of which was received by us. Costa added, “Egypt plays a pivotal role in the region and beyond, promoting stability and resolving conflicts. We have remarkably growing economic and trade relations, and we look forward to further growth. We have rich cooperation in multiple areas: trade, security, mobility, migration, energy, education, research, and culture.
I am very pleased that the European Union and Egypt signed three important agreements today, in particular one allowing Egypt to participate in the Horizon Europe program. This is a strong demonstration of the importance we place on education and people-to-people contacts.
Last week, I attended the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit. It was a moment of hope and global unity that all parties must preserve, and we must all work to ensure that its promises are fulfilled.”
Dear President Sisi, I would like to commend your leadership. Your steadfast engagement has been Your tireless mediation efforts played a crucial role in concluding the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
The agreement resulted in the reunification of all living Israeli prisoners with their families. After two years of death and destruction, this agreement restored hope to the Palestinian people. A hope that must now turn into lasting peace and reconstruction.
Dear President, As you said in Sharm el-Sheikh, and I quote: "Peace is only complete when the hand of reconstruction extends beyond the destruction."
The first difficulties have appeared, but all parties must work in good faith to ensure that the ceasefire is adhered to and that the delivery of humanitarian aid continues on a large scale. We want Israelis and Palestinians to be able to build a peaceful future together.
We want a lasting peace based on the two-state solution, with Israel and the State of Palestine living side by side in peace and security, free from terrorism. The European Union stands ready to assist, as we have done before, in recovery, reconstruction, and reform support.
Beyond the Middle East, Egypt plays a vital role in stabilizing the region as a whole. We share common interests and goals—in Libya, Sudan, and Somalia. Today, we agreed to continue and deepening our dialogue and engagement on these critical issues.
Of course, maritime security is also vital for both parties. Given Egypt's position, we will work together to keep sea lanes safe and open for trade, in the Red Sea, the Suez Canal, the Mediterranean, and beyond.
Finally, our partnership will remain based on mutual respect, shared values, and a strong commitment to multilateralism.
Both the EU and Egypt support the United Nations and the rules-based international order, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law. We agree that working together is the best way to resolve global problems.
We also discussed Russian aggression against Ukraine. We are united in our desire for a just and lasting peace.
I briefed President Sisi on the European Union's continued support for Ukraine to achieve peace and pressure Russia to come to the negotiating table.
This endeavor has seen recent developments, and the EU strongly supports President Trump's efforts. The EU will continue to cooperate with Egypt on this issue, as we see Egypt as a leading voice on the global stage and a partner, also regarding Ukraine.
The EU and Egypt will continue to work together. I am confident that the European Commission My friend, Ursula von der Leyen, and I will do our utmost to ensure that our bilateral relations continue to strengthen.
