  Earlier this month, the European Union announced the appointment of French diplomat Marion Lalis as a new coordinator for combating individual and structural hatred and discrimination against Muslims.
The European Commission said in a statement that Lalis will work with EU member states and European institutions, as well as with civil society and academia, to strengthen the response to anti-Muslim hatred.
She added that the new coordinator will be the main point of contact for organizations working in this regard in the European Union. The statement quoted EU Commissioner for Equality Helena Daly as saying that the task of the new coordinator includes confronting hatred and structural and individual discrimination against Muslims.
"We must fight hatred against Muslims in all areas of life, including education, employment and social policy," she added. "We must also collect data on Muslim hatred and discrimination and address those aspects."
The official spokesman for the European Union for the Middle East and North Africa, Luis Bueno, welcomed the appointment of the new coordinator. He said in a tweet posted on his Twitter account that this matter will strengthen the fight against individual and structural hatred and discrimination against Muslims in the European Union. He also praised Lalis' ability to speak Arabic .
