Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union said it was deeply concerned about the continuing escalation of violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. It condemns the terrorist attack in the West Bank on Sunday, in which two Israelis were killed, and another attack on Monday that claimed the life of another Israeli.
Through a statement issued by the office of Foreign Policy Coordinator Josep Borrell issued on Tuesday in Brussels, the European Union condemned the outbreak of settler violence that resulted in the death of a Palestinian, the injury of several hundred Palestinians, the burning of homes and shops, and the unacceptable destruction of Palestinian property.
The statement noted that the European official contacted the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to convey the message that violence and terrorism must stop, that all civilians must be protected, and that immediate measures to stop the escalation are necessary.
All parties must take immediate steps to end this deadly cycle of violence, prevent further loss of life, ensure accountability and bring perpetrators to justice.
The European Union welcomes the joint statement issued on Sunday in Aqaba, Jordan, in which the Israeli and Palestinian sides agreed to work towards achieving a just and lasting peace, while stressing the need to commit to de-escalation on the ground and to prevent further violence.
The EU commends the role of Jordan, Egypt and the United States in facilitating the talks and calls on the parties to implement the commitments made
