Brussels - Geneva: Europe and the Arabs
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the Nobel Committee's decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the detained Iranian activist, Narges Mohammadi, confirms the "courage and determination" of Iranian women. According to what was stated in the United Nations daily news bulletin, a copy of which we received this morning
UNHCR spokeswoman Liz Throssell told reporters in Geneva on Friday that it was clear that Iranian women “were an inspiration to the world,” adding: “We saw their courage and determination in the face of reprisals, intimidation, violence and arrest.”
Ms. Throssell said Iranian women “have been harassed because of what they wear or do not wear, and there are increasingly stringent legal, social and economic measures against them.”
It is noteworthy that Mrs. Mohammadi worked for many years as a journalist. She is also an author and deputy director of the Iranian civil rights organization Center for Human Rights Defenders, and is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence in Tehran's Evin Prison.
In May, Ms. Mohammadi was awarded an award celebrating freedom of the press by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), along with two other imprisoned Iranian journalists, in the context of the wave of protests surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody in September. September 2022.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations said that awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi is an important reminder that the rights of women and girls are facing pressure through the persecution of women human rights defenders in Iran and elsewhere.
He added, in a press statement, that the Nobel Peace Prize honors all women who struggle for their rights while their freedoms, health, and even their lives are at risk.
