Presidential race in Senegal, February 2024, elections or selections? Written by the Islamic thinker, Professor Muhammad Galai Engay - Director of the Mihrab Institute in Brussels

Winston Churchill, the Nobel Prize winner in Literature who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (from 1940 to 1945), wrote: “The longer you stare backward, the farther forward you can see. This is not a political or philosophical opinion, because any ophthalmologist He can confirm that for you." It is a saying that we chose to begin this article with because we thought that it was completely consistent with the current Senegalese reality, and because through it we could also explore the near political future or accurately draw a political map of what events will lead to before and after the next presidential elections scheduled to be held on February 25, 2024 AD. It does not escape the mind of anyone who follows the political situation in Senegal that this country finds itself today at a crossroads, and it has only two options: either the option of freedom, justice, hope, responsibility, honor, glory, dignity, etc., or the option of setback, regression, degradation, and tyranny. And rock bottom, etc. This calls for the responsibility of everyone before history, and even more so given the painful events taking place at the present time, it calls for the responsibility of civil society, especially the religious authorities in the country, which previously had leading roles in establishing security, peace and stability. Corruption has spread across the country at all levels, and every jealous Senegalese has the right to shout, saying: The flood has reached its peak. Indeed, it is time for the wise people of the country, if they exist, to put a final end to all these violations and setbacks committed by Macky Sall's government. Silence sometimes has the flavor of conspiracy, and speech often has the odor of hypocrisy. The government’s crimes are not new to today. In the early days, when the star of the charismatic political leader, Mr. Othman Sonko, rose to prominence, Macky Sall’s government began to pursue him in every valley and club with all its power and resourcefulness in order to overthrow him politically and destroy his character morally. It did not hesitate for a moment to set up Machines continued against him, and what resulted was that most of the glory that the man gained was the work of his political rivals, who, unconsciously, paved the way for him and scattered roses and flowers on it. From this standpoint, we say: If it is true that affliction is a norm that does not fail in the lives of great people, heroes, social reformers, and the like, then it is also wise to believe that “the ferocity of enemies may produce the chivalry of nobles.” In fact, what happened in the previous decade, that is, since the emergence of the Bastif party in 2014 AD until the present moment, is the fierce legal violations and attacks against leader Sonko, his supporters and his party, and even against the entire Senegalese people: arbitrary arrests, murders, torture and abuse in prisons, Political scandals, embezzlement of state funds, all of this is enough to sound the alarm, but what is worse is that the political arena will undoubtedly witness the most horrific crimes against citizens from one angle, and against the candidates in the presidential race next February from another angle. It is a government devoid of political decency and elegance. It is deaf, blind, and imbecilic. It has no decency, no modesty, and even no blood. It is useful to point out that the current whirlwind surrounding the upcoming presidential elections over the problem of sponsorship of candidates (Parrainage) is only a blip or a typical sample of what this unjust and tyrannical government will commit in the coming days. It is a fantasy for a single conscious Senegalese to believe that this government is ready to organize fair elections so that power is handed over in a peaceful manner to the winner. Indeed, death and hell are better for it than handing over power to one of its competitors. If God had decreed that this had happened against her will, it would undoubtedly have been a speck in Mackie Sal’s eye and a pain in his throat until he was trapped in the morning. For all of this, the Senegalese people who yearn for change must be well aware that the next stage of the political struggle will be much more difficult than the previous ones, in various respects. The temporal and spatial contexts have taught us that they are always subject to their rulings, both negatively and positively. This is God’s law in the universe, and there will be no change in God’s law. Mackie and his gang allied themselves with Satan against their country out of a desire to keep the government in their grip, so the situation remains as it is or worse, so they continue to suck the blood of the people and live at their expense by depleting their resources. It is worth noting that this ruling gang is working day and night in all its efforts to create a strong, ineradicable dictatorial regime. Her feeling of complete helplessness in front of a large segment of this proud people, who did not and will not accept abandoning the leader of change, Othman Sonko, despite him now being behind bars, made her, as usual, resort to plotting and conspiring with judges and administrators to achieve her goal, which is to prevent the Pastif leader from running for office. You will not find a more accurate description of the state of this brutal government than what was mentioned by the scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi, who lived in the second half of the nineteenth century, which was the century of colonialism, tyranny, and the depletion of the resources of countries that were suffering under the yoke of the imperial West. He saw in his book “The Natures of Tyranny and the wrestler of enslavement: “The tyrant is a helpless individual, who has no power or strength except with his helpers, the enemies of justice and supporters of injustice. The accumulation of excessive wealth generates tyranny and is harmful to the morals of individuals, and tyranny is the root of all corruption.” Thus, you find that the government of this ill-fated president has created a major rift in the Senegalese social entity and has distorted the image of the Senegalese and their country, staining it to the point that sea water is unable to wash it away and return it to how it was before. Also, “the rosy image of Senegalese democracy, which has long been presented to the world as a bright exception in an African environment full of coups and democratic setbacks, human rights crises and ethnic and tribal conflicts,” has today withered and weakened, and only Rukban’s conversations and memories of the past remain. Or if we want to analyze scientifically and, as a result of this analysis and scrutiny, learn about the source of this government’s failure and the source of its incurable disease, all we have to do is return to the books on “Self-Development and Elevation of the Human Soul” to derive from them some elements that may certainly help us understand its condition and behavior. It is a "revenge-angry" government because the basis of its actions is such hatred and rage that it is unaware of the dangerous consequences that result from it. What is also noticeable is that she does not learn from her repeated mistakes. Mistakes have accumulated in her classroom without learning lessons from them. In addition, it is a government that does not understand, or even is unaware of, its personality, its entity, and itself as the supreme authority and protector of the law and the constitution. It is a government that does not rationally seek to improve its image in its setbacks and stumbles before the people, the world, and history. Rather, it seeks only to achieve what it wants and reach its goal in any possible way, no matter the cost, without shame, modesty, or decency on its part. It is a dispersed government that does not control its agenda, nor does it have a background in “political time” to control matters and events. Rather, it acts according to the reactions of its opponents. Finally, it is a government that is not aware of its weaknesses rather than its strengths. Rather, it is subject to events and a prisoner of its political opponents and the proud people together. As experts in this art say, we mean “the art of self-development”: “One good idea is enough to change a person’s life for the better and improve it.” Since this government does not have a good idea, all it has is machinations, conspiracy, and machinations, so it approves of it: (And a good country brings forth its growth by the permission of its Lord. And that which is evil does not come forth except in distress) [Al-A’raf: 58]. All of these fine lessons clearly indicate that we are facing a failed, incapable government that is using the power that the state has placed in its hands to oppress the people and suck their blood, the people who are the source of its power and legitimacy.
If the situation is as we described, and we believe it to be so, is it reasonable for Macky Sall and his gang, as respectable democratic people, to resort to organizing fair and just presidential elections... There is no doubt that this is a form of imagination and a form of speculation. The astonishing wonder sometimes lies in the behavior of some of the Pastifians, and even some of their notables, insinuating that their victory is possible without movement, confrontation, resistance, and the people standing together to prevent all kinds of fraud and fabrication of results!!! This type of thinking in this difficult time is the essence of naivety and combined ignorance of the reality of this government and its hidden ambitions. The regime has selected from among the candidates those who will run in the presidential race on February 25, 2024 AD, and it has also selected those who will recognize the victory of its candidate when the fabricated and tentative results are announced. It is no longer a secret hidden from anyone today that we are not heading toward elections, but rather a prepared scenario, a democratic scandal, and a historical farce, which will undoubtedly remain a growing stain on our collective conscience and on the brow of history forever. Leader Ousmane Sonko has repeatedly repeated that Macky Sall only knows confrontation. Whether we like it or not, to overthrow his tyrannical regime, confrontation is inevitable. Our time is in the morning. Isn't the morning near? I have excused those who have warned.
