Also in Brussels, a statement was distributed by the co-presidency of the European Green Party, welcoming the decision to hold an emergency summit of European leaders to discuss a common position in response to US President Donald Trump's unilateral approach to Russia's aggression in Ukraine, and his government's observations on democracy in Europe. European Green Party co-chair Ciaran Coffey said: “It is good that European leaders are holding an emergency summit. Peace in Europe must come from Europe. The European Union has always been a peace project. We must prove that we can defend the security of the European Union, but also for peace and universal values cannot be left behind.”
France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and Denmark will meet in Paris for an emergency summit on the war in Ukraine, after US President Donald Trump announced bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The co-chair of the European Greens, Vola Tseisi, said:
"The Ukrainian people's struggle for freedom, peace and EU membership is our struggle. A just peace can only be guaranteed with the participation of Ukraine and Europe. There is no Ukraine without Ukraine. There is no Europe without Europe. The European Commission and EU governments must step up their commitment to Ukraine and to the security of Europe.
Democracy is under attack from Russia's hybrid war against the West and active disinformation campaigns about the democratic future of Europe. The European Greens urge all European parties to condemn the remarks of Vice-President JD Vance on democracy and freedom of expression in the EU.
At the end of the Munich Security Conference on Sunday, it was announced that European leaders are scheduled to hold an informal emergency summit on Ukraine in Paris on Monday.
Christoph Heusgen, President of the Munich Security Conference, said: "The message from Munich is clear. Europe is not nice. Europe is necessary. President Macron is preparing to hold a meeting of European leaders, to hold an emergency summit in Paris. According to what was reported by the European news network in Brussels, "Euronews", adding, "The United States announced that it intends to meet with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to begin talks aimed at ending the war waged by Moscow on Ukraine.
However, Zelensky said that Kiev was not invited to these talks - and that his country will not dialogue with Russia before discussing with its strategic partners.
The US Secretary of State had stated on Sunday that the coming period will reveal the extent of Putin's seriousness about ending the war. Noting that Ukraine and Europe will be part of any "real negotiations."
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Saudi Arabia today, Monday, to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russian officials, as part of negotiations aimed at a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
This comes after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, to begin peace negotiations.
Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates could be among the options for hosting a summit between the two presidents, given the large Russian and Ukrainian communities in Abu Dhabi, as well as its role as a mediator in last year’s prisoner exchange. The agency also quoted a US lawmaker and a private source as saying that Rubio spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, and will meet Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, along with Trump’s national security adviser Mike Waltz and White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. It is not yet clear who he will meet on the Russian side.
