The leadership of a state, the leadership of a government, the leadership of a political party, the leadership of an organization, the leadership of an institution, all of them are recognized leadership that belongs to competent people, or sometimes to those who are lucky or have enough savvy to ascend to leadership positions.
The common people on planet Earth also share a common desire to drive, a different kind of driving, all of which is fun and represents a social prestige for many. It is driving a car.
But it seems that this passion for obtaining a driver’s license is slowly declining among members of what is known as Generation Z, born in the mid-nineties to two thousand and ten.
Studies and figures in America confirm this, although the analyzes are different. The Insurance Information Institute says in 2020 that only 25% of 16-year-olds in America obtained driver’s licenses, compared to 43% in 1997.
Another study published at the beginning of this year by a special group that monitors financial markets, including insurance companies, found that the percentage of drivers aged 19 years or younger decreased in more than 40 American states between 2012 and 2022, and the largest decrease was in New York State.
Some specialists explain this by the increased awareness among new generations of the issue of climate change and global warming, in addition to factors such as stress and anxiety that play a role in avoiding the desire to sit behind the wheel of a car in crowded streets.
While many analyzes confirm that the reason for the transformation is technology that has made the world a connected society controlled by smart phone devices without the need for transportation, transportation companies such as Uber and Lyft in America or Careem and others in the Middle East have strengthened this trend, and we should not forget an important factor, which is the financial cost. The high rate in recent years of owning a car or insuring it.
The question now is: how long will this trend continue? Has there been a complete lack of desire for the pleasure of driving, and has reliance on public means and transportation company services increased? Or does the future hold new surprises and changes for us?
